San Francisco Here We Come

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Its official. We’re moving to SF at the end of July. I will be working as an interaction designer for Apple. Alex and I are both very excited. We can’t wait to get involved in all the fun stuff Neverland (SF) has to offer. I can’t wait to live where being a geek is cool.

I’m also really excited to get back into playing. Anyone in the bay area know a good jam session? I want to play jazz again, I’m bringing my awesome Tyrolean upright bass. I’ll need to start meeting good players all over again. I’m also psyched to be in the land of Tower of Power and Herbie’s Headhunters. Bay area funk!

But what I really want to do is start another technology driven jam/funk/electro/dance band like I had in Chicago. I’m thinking about the possibilities Apple MainStage, Arduino, MIDI, and MAX/MSP+Jitter can afford a live improvisational band. It’s gonna be sweet.

Snackbot head gestures
Snackbot head gestures Here is a little movie of some head gestures for Snackbot. Paul, the roboticist, created an API and in his IDE for me to write these functions in C++. The gestures will need to be adjusted once the actual head is on, but you get the idea. Snackbot head gestures

Interviewing Firefighters

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

Last week I had the rare opportunity to hang out with a company of firefighters. I was doing research for my product design class, where we are designing personal protective equipment (PPE) for firefighters.

The guys welcomed us in and were very friendly, no doubt bolstered by the Steelers superbowl win the night before. Before we could even ask, they had us putting on their gear, self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and all. Damn. This stuff is heavy, bulky, and the mask made me claustrophobic just standing there. The guys did their best to talk us through situations they encounter while wearing all this gear. Its amazing. These guys hear an alarm, jump in their clothes, and zoom off, not really knowing what to expect, talk about stressful. In the case of an actual fire, they basically do everything by touch, its very hard to see and hear in a fire. Firefighters deserve more credit.

The firefighters gave my team a lot of good information to digest, and I hope we can come back to them with a prototype soon.
